Screendance Locations

A outdoor screendance location shall appear:

Beautiful or ugly, natural, austere, bleak, abandoned, very old, ancient or obviously dated, damaged or repaired, unfinished, primitive, futuristic, obscure, mystical, sacred or profane, conflicted, classic, elegant, simple, unfinished, repurposed, abstract or representational, or unknown.  Unconventional always preferable. Whatever it is, extreme examples play better.

The location needs to be:

safe and suitable for dancing

free from interfering people and vehicle traffic for the many hours need for recording

illuminated by direct sun during the PM Golden Hour

Rock Quarry - Verona Road, old photograph

Lovely example of blasted quarry cliffs that nicely emulate natural ones.  This is an old Google Earth aerial, the area is now overgrown and not nearly as dramatic.  Blasting is restricted near cities ad it is hard to find such dramatic locations.  But this is the idea: beautiful rocks, close to home.

Waite Circle

I have always found this city spot charming. Nice colors, brook ambience. Very private and quiet. Very dangerous to walk on.  Many camera angles available from street and bike path.  Maybe dancing on the grass above the pipe, and still people on the rocks.

Lakeview Gazebo

Charming gazebo on a pond.  Lovely in all seasons - maybe even dance on the ice!  Picnic tables can be removed.  Nice late PM light.  Lots of good angles around the pond.  Busy area, can be reserved for $100.

Shorewood Quarry

Abandoned quarry in the center of the city.  Rough, rocky debris.  Overgrown and buggy, probably best in Fall or Winter.  Many angles above and below, good PM sun into lens from South.

Raymer's Cove

Charming tiny cove close to campus.  Nice danceable stairwell, but ugly galvanized pilings.  Busy in nice weather.  Nice glittering sun off the lake.  Put the dancers in the water?  Ducks galore.

Exact Sciences

Long industrial space with benches, pillars, and towers.  "Define and articulate an architectural space".

Cannonball Path Boardwalk

Long, smooth, safely danceable synthetic boardwalk.  Nice sun into lens, aesthetic South view only, lots of   moods depending on time and weather, great sunset view.  Usually deserted except for traffic on the bike path.

Odana School Garage

Bleak, dimly lit, vast, echoic, low air handler rush, ugly yellow lane markers, concrete floor, unused locked space, always empty, permission needed for access.  Right for the right project, maybe interesting at night with special lights.
